Has broken the world record four times since winning the Commonwealth Games decathlon title 1978. He won two more Commonwealth titles (1982, 1986), two Olympic gold medals (1980, 1984), three European medals (silver 1978; gold 1982, 1986), and a world title (1983). He retired in 1992.
